• Open the Control Panel, then choose Add/Remove programs. Find the "3dfx tools" entry and uninstall it. If you have any other display adapter programs in there
(such as ATI MACH 64, or ATI DVD Player), ensure these are uninstalled too - this
prevents any conflicts later. • Reboot when asked to. • Next, set your display driver as "Standard Display Adapter (VGA)". You can do this by right clicking on your desktop, click on "Settings" then click the "Advanced" tab. Now click on "Adapter" and then "Change". • From the "Update device driver wizard" click on "Next" then select "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location so you can select the one you want", press "Next" and choose "Show all Hardware". Under the "Manufacturers" menu, select "(Standard display types)" and finaly select "Standard display adapter". Click on "Next" and follow the procedure until windows asks you to reboot. If you get a message saying "The selected display adapter was not made to be compatible with your hardware" simply ignore it and continue. • After reboot, press F3 and search for the following on your hard-drive: voodoo*.* 3dfx*.* glide*.* • Only delete files which you know are from the previous driver package. Usually, these will remain exclusively in the Windows folder. Don't bother deleting any JPEG or other documents that do not belong with the driver package - doing so may stop some programs working correctly. • Next, open regedit (Start, run, regedit) and firstly backup your registry. To back up your registry, follow this procedure: 1. Start the "Registry Editor" 2. Click on the "Registry" menu and choose "Export Registry File" 3. Browse to a location where you can save the registry database (preferably a floopy disk or any other external media) 4. Type a filename and select "Save" • Once done, return to the registy and look for the following: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\3dfx interactive Once found, delete the entry completely HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display You will find numbered folders here - these are your previous dislay driver registry entries and should be deleted. Only delete the numbered folders and not the "Display" folder itself. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Monitor Inside you will find numbered folders, each relating to the different monitor drivers you have installed on your machine. Delete each numbered folder. Be EXTREMELY careful when using regedit - it is a very low level application and if you delete any important entries by mistake, you may stop your computer from booting. • If you wish to restore your previous good registry, follow this procedure: 1. Start the "Registry Editor" 2. Click on the "Registry" option and select "Import Registry File" 3. Browse to where your previous good registry database resides and select "Open". • Reboot • Windows will now detect your monitor - if it requires a specific driver, give Windows the location of it and then reboot. • Next, open Windows explorer, ensure that "show all files" is ticked from the folder options (Start, Settings, Folder Options, View, Hidden Files), and go to the folder "C:\Windows\Inf" - delete the "voodoo 3.inf" document. Next, go to "C:\Windows\Inf\Others" and delete all 3dfx related files, and any previous video card driver files. • Next, go to your Windows/Temp directory and delete everything in there. Don't worry, all what will remain in here is files or folders left over from your installations and they can be safely deleted. • You must have Winzip or some other zip software installed (such as PKzip) for the next procedure. Browse to where the driver package resides and right-click it. Choose "Extract to" and extract the driver package to the Windows/Temp directory. Now the entire driver package has been unzipped into this directory. • Go to your Windows/Temp directory and double click on the "Setup" icon. This will now install the 3dfx tools part of the driver package. Follow the procedure until you are asked to reboot. Do so. • Upon restart, open "Control Panel" and choose "System". Next select "Device Manager" and finaly select "Display Adapter". Now you should find the driver and product version (such as 3dfx Voodoo3 v1.05.00) underneath. Double click this. • In the "Driver Properties" window, select "Driver" and choose "Update Driver". Now go through the same procedure earlier until you come across the option to "Have Disk". Select this and when it asks you to specify where the driver resides, select Windows/Temp/Driver9x. This is where the driver INI files reside. Choose "OK" and follow the procedure until Windows asks you to reboot. Once again, Windows may tell you "The selected display adapter was not made to be compatible with your hardware" simply ignore this and continue. • After reboot, reinstall the latest version of DirectX, and once done your graphics card driver is installed optimaly and is ready for action!!! Don't forget to delete everything from your Windows/Temp directory. Well done! The procedure to manually installing a graphics card driver is now complete. |
